Windows 11 Upgrade?

Windows 11 Upgrade? A reader asks…

I have a Windows 10 computer, and ran PC health, which says my computer is eligible for Windows 11. I’m not sure how to update to Windows 11. Any advice?

You should run Windows Update and look at the screen after the update checker completes. You should see a blue button labeled “Download and Update” in a box that says “Upgrade to Windows 11 is ready–and it’s free!” At this point, no compatible Windows 10 computer should have to wait to upgrade to Windows 11. When Windows 11 was first released, it was rolled out slowly as a free upgrade, but that was a few years ago.

If you’re still not seeing the button, you can upgrade your computer using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant. That’s available at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11 – just use the first Download Now button. On that webpage, you’ll also see another Download Now button under “Create Windows 11 Installation Media” – don’t bother with that. There’s also an option for downloading a Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) -don’t bother with that. The first option works just fine.

I should mention that Windows 10 computers older than about five years may have old-style spinning hard drives. These have a shorter service life, and you may find that the hard drive fails sometime in the next few years. If you’re handy, you could replace that hard drive with a new solid-state drive (SSD), which would extend your PC’s lifespan by several years.
