Mac Screen Crack
Mac Screen Crack: a reader asks…
My 5-month-old Macbook Pro screen has gone haywire. I’m not sure if it’s cracked or what. I didn’t drop the laptop or anything, the display just started showing these vertical lines one day. What should I do?
It’s doubtful based on the picture you sent that the physical screen is cracked, more likely your internal hardware (specifically, the graphics adapter) has gone bad. Since your Mac is almost new, it’s certainly a defect and covered by the standard Apple warranty (1 year), so even if you didn’t purchase AppleCare, the repair shouldn’t cost you anything.
What you need to do is set up a repair. If you have a nearby Apple Store, you can drop off your Mac. If not, you’ll have to ship the Mac to the repair center. You can start by calling Apple at (800) 275-2273 to setup the repair. Alternatively, you can visit the Apple Support site (https://support.apple.com/contact) and chose the “Setup a repair” option. You can also choose the Chat option if you want to talk to someone first.
Apple is really good about turn-around on warranty repairs, often you’ll get your Mac back in just a few days. Before you give them your Mac, you should make sure you’ve got an up-to-date Time Machine backup, just in case something goes wrong. Likely nothing will, but it’s best to be safe.
