iPhone screen non-responsive
iPhone screen non-responsive: a reader asks…
Hi Chris, I’ve got an iPhone 6 Plus and I’ve found that the screen goes unresponsive on me. I’ve waited hours and it doesn’t start working again. The only way to fix it is to do a hard shutdown (hold down both home and power buttons) and then restart. That fixes it for awhile, but then the problem happens again. I do note that the home button (and fingerprint reader) still work, but no touch-screen functionality at all. I’ve had to use Siri to even get to see my calendar or use the phone. Is there an easy fix?
From time to time, I’ve found the iPhone screen to stop responding. Sometimes this happens for a short while – I think the iPhone is thinking very hard, and then it comes back to being responsive. But your problem is a bit more of an issue, especially since a hard restart only fixes it for a while.
Your iPhone is sick, no other way to describe it. Either your operating system is corrupted, or there is a hardware problem. Either way, your only recourse is to take or send it in to Apple for service (aka, repair or replacement). If you have AppleCare+ service, it will cost you a lot less than if you don’t.
Where you start is by going to https://www.apple.com/support/iphone/repair/ and going thru the process of:
- scheduling an appointment to bring your iPhone into an Apple Store (if one is close by)
- talking to Apple Support (or chatting with them) to arrange for sending your iPhone in for repair
My guess is that if you have AppleCare, they will simply swap out your iPhone 6 for a new (aka, refurbished) one and transfer everything over from one to the other so you’re back on your way as quickly as possible.

Happened to me this morning!
let’s hope it’s just a one-time thing. Did you try a hard reset (press both home and power buttons till the screen goes dark, then start up normally) and did it restore normal working?
Yes and yes. First I called a colleague who works part-time the Apple Store. Much better now.
Yay!
