Hi Coach, I’ve got a desktop computer and have a wireless keyboard and mouse. Everything’s been working great for awhile, but all the sudden the keyboard stopped working. The mouse is still working though. What can I do to fix this?

Let me first suggest that you replace the batteries on the keyboard, since that’s the most likely reason why it stopped working. Some wireless keyboards have a physical power switch that can be inadvertently turned off, so you may want to check that as well.

Once you’ve got fresh batteries in the keyboard, see if it now works with your computer. If it doesn’t, you might have to press a button on the USB dongle that came with the keyboard, or re-establish the Bluetooth connection if the computer has forgotten the device. tips-button-on-keyboard-image-from-shutterstockI would guess that if fresh batteries solved your problem that sooner or later you’ll see the same thing happen with the wireless mouse. The solution is the same, just replace the batteries. Some keyboards and mice can get up to a year or more on a set of batteries, but some may require a battery change every few months or so.

One other thing to try if none of the above works is to simply unplug the keyboard’s USB dongle (the small part that plugs into one of your computer’s USB ports) and plug it back in – and also try restarting the computer. You’d be amazed at how many computer problems are fixed by simply restarting the computer!
