Access to Google Docs or Sheets

Access to Google Docs or Sheets: a reader asks…
I have a verizon email address I use for most things, and also a gmail account. Recently, I signed up to work with someone on some volunteer efforts, and I signed up using my verizon email account. Unfortunately, the volunteer work involves working with some spreadsheets and documents, and they gave me links to those, which are google sheets and docs. I can’t access them. I’m using Chrome. What’s wrong?
What’s wrong is that your Chrome web browser is tied to your Gmail account, but your volunteer account is tied to your Verizon email.
On the internet, access is tied to your digital identity, and your Gmail address and your Verizon email address are two different identities. The volunteer organization granted your Verizon identity permission to access those Google Sheets and Docs, but you’re trying to access them with your Gmail identity, which doesn’t have permission.
The solution is to change your volunteer account’s email from the Verizon address to your Gmail address. Then your digital identity used in your web browser would be the same as the digital identity of your volunteer account.
Lots of users of Google services don’t even realize that this whole issue of digital identity can cause problems. The fact that you have multiple email addresses means your digital identity online is going to be based on whatever email account you used to create online accounts. Mixing them up will continue to cause problems.
