Apple Updates

Apple Updates: a reader asks…

I seem to be constantly bombarded with updates to my technology. I have an iPhone and iPad, and just got told to update to 26.2. My question is, how much of a priority is this? Can’t I put this off for awhile?

Generally, you should update your technology devices anytime an update becomes available. That doesn’t necessarily mean drop everything and do the update now, but it does mean you should do it at the next convenient opportunity. Fortunately, Apple devices have a button you can tap to apply the update overnight (e.g., tonight).

I get how annoying this can be, especially if you don’t use your device every day. However, it’s not just improvements that Apple (or any technology company) issues with these updates; it’s also security updates and bug fixes that are critical to the trouble-free operation of your devices.

This is not limited to Apple devices; pretty much all computing technology gets updates at some point. Sometimes it’s called a software update, sometimes a firmware update, and sometimes an upgrade versus an update. These updates are important for keeping your digital life running smoothly.

In many cases, it’s ok to put off updates until it’s convenient, but I wouldn’t put them off too long. Hackers and scammers are constantly finding vulnerabilities in software and our devices, and those updates help to patch those vulnerabilities.
