BBM Woes – Blackberry Messenger for iOS still plagued by problems

Hey, I saw BBM available on the Apple App Store, so installed it yesterday. I am a former Blackberry user who had to switch to an iPhone to keep up with the times. But lots of my colleagues are still on Blackberry, so I wanted to re-establish messaging with them using BBM. Here’s my problem. After downloading the app, I followed the instructions to get my BBM account activated, and the next day I received an email putting me at the head of the line, and ready to activate. I gave it my best shot, but the app just leaves me at the screen I was at before I got the email notification from Blackberry. What should I do?

BBMemailadvisoryfrontlineOhh, perhaps practice a lot of patience? Blackberry has had a rocky start to its rollout of the new BBM for iOS and Android. First off, they had to pull the app to fix some stuff. Second, they had to institute a queue for activation, so as not to overload their servers. And now, even their queue doesn’t seem to be working right.

We were able to replicate your experience, and verify the same problem. We tried killing the app and restarting it, shutting down and restarting the iPhone (we have an iPhone 5), and even upgraded to the latest iOS (7.0.3, just released yesterday) – still no go for the BBM app.

So, sorry we can’t offer more help to get you up and running, but it’s completely dependent on Blackberry. So, patience is the key here.

Update: about 9 hours after we received the activation email, we were able to activate BBM – so patience paid off! Now our biggest gripe is the work-intensive method to get connected to others in Blackberry Messenger – we’re not big BBM users, so that seems way too much work for us. Our guess is that BBM is primarily for hard-core BBM users who have a big network of other BBM users.
