Rich Text Messaging between iPhone and Android

Rich Text Messaging between iPhone and Android: a reader asks…

Link to MacRumors Explainer

I use an iPhone, but have friends with Android smartphones. When we exchange text messages (I use the Apple messaging app, iMessage), we can’t exchange photos, emojis, or other cool stuff. Is there a way to make this work, or do I need a 3rd-party messaging app?

Actually, starting with iOS 18, a feature called RCS messaging became available to iPhone users (thanks to MacRumors for their excellent explainer article). This feature depends on the cell phone service carrier, but all major carriers support it. I’m guessing that for some reason your iPhone doesn’t have that turned on yet. Here’s how to get maximum compatibility for messaging between your iPhone and other smartphones:

  1. Go to Settings, then Apps, and scroll down to Messages – tap that
  2. Scroll down to iMessage and make sure the slider is on, then scroll down and make sure the slider is on for “Retry as Text Message”
  3. Scroll down a little bit more to the Text Messaging section, and tap RCS Messaging. Slide on all three sliders: RCS Messaging, End-to-End Encryption (Beta) and RCS Business Messages
  4. back up one screen and make sure MMS Messaging is turned on

You can peruse the other settings and slider options and turn any others on or off you like, but the items above will ensure you can send and receive anything from anyone. You’ll still see blue and green message bubbles, but the functionality will be very much the same and seamless.

There are other 3rd-party messaging apps you may find useful, particularly if you want to separate your texting and other communications into silos (like for international contacts, journalists, or others who want/need the highest security and privacy). Popular examples include Signal and WhatsApp.

RCS stands for Rich Communications Services, and is a modern replacement for MMS and SMS. It brings cross-platform compatibility that we’ve all been asking for to the Apple ecosystem (finally!). MacRumors has a nice explainer webpage at https://www.macrumors.com/guide/rcs/.
