Time to go bye-bye Java

oracle-java-logoTime to go bye-bye Java: a reader asks…

Hi Chris, I have a Windows 7 computer. When I look in the add/remove programs, I see two entries for Java. Do I need these or should I uninstall them?

For most consumers, I think it’s time to uninstall Java from your list of installed programs. Please note that Java is not the same as JavaScript. Java is a programming language that can be used in software applications on your computer as well as in a web browser. It’s quite powerful, and has been attractive to hackers. In most cases, Java (the program or programs that show up in your list of programs) is not needed and can be safely uninstalled. Unless you have a specific program application or device which requires Java (such as some home automation systems).

JavaScript is also a programming language but it only works inside a web browser. You can disable JavaScript from within the settings for popular web browsers like Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and Safari, but in most cases you don’t need to. As long as you keep your web browser up-to-date, you shouldn’t have any trouble.

uninstall-java-screenshotTo uninstall Java from your Microsoft Windows computer, just click Start, then type ‘Uninstall a program’ which brings up the list of programs. Click on any one that has “Java” in the name and click the Uninstall link. If you have more than one entry, uninstall them as well. Older versions of Java may not be automatically uninstalled when you upgraded Java (previously), so you may have various other versions showing which may be named J2SE, Java 2, Java SE or Java Runtime Environment. Just go ahead and uninstall them all.
